DeLand business owner fighting to keep screen display officials say violates code

A downtown DeLand business owner has been ordered to remove a display in his store window they claim is a violation of the city’s sign ordinance or face stiff fines. Wholesale Computer Outlet has had a prime spot on Woodland Boulevard in downtown Deland for 17 years. About a year ago, the owner, John Martineau, put up a multiscreen display to showcase his technology. He said no one gave him any problems about the screens until October. Martineau said he was delighted with the effect nine big screen televisions placed together inside his store window made. The televisions are powered by computer and speak volumes about his business, what he does and what he sells. “Because it has movement on it, that I can’t have it. I can only have a static image and it can only change once per day, which to me is ridiculous, it would actually ruin the screens,” Martineau said. The neon inside the store windows and above the front door are also sign ordinance violations though Martineau said neon should be considered art. 12m3/h Water Pump Officials said the strict sign ordinance is an effort to maintain the charm of its award-winning historic downtown. They said electron...

Thieves steal bronze Dali sculptures from Swedish gallery

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — (AP) — At least two thieves have stolen items from an art gallery in Stockholm, police said, with Swedish media reporting that they include 10 to 12 table-size bronze sculptures by Spanish artist Salvador Dali. Police said “at least two thieves” entered the Couleur gallery in central Stockholm early Thursday morning by smashing the entrance window. Forensic experts were searching the gallery for clues and no suspects have been arrested. Gallery owner Peder Enstrom told the Swedish news agency TT that the alarm went off after 4 a.m. and police arrived at the scene shortly after. Each of the sculptures by Dali are worth between 200,000 to 500,000 kronor ($21,000 to $52,000) and measures up to 50 centimeters (20 inches) tall, Enstrom told TT. Black Quartz Stone The sculptures — including several of Dali’s famous melting watches on a tree — had been on display at the gallery for 10 days. The exhibition was to close Saturday. Ring introduces new privacy and security controls, Access Controller, and smart lighting

Controlling smart devices with their voice is something most Alexa users do regularly. In fact, customers now use Alexa for smart home controls hundreds of millions of times each week, according to Amazon. Perhaps it’s no wonder, then, that Ring — the device maker Amazon acquired for over $1 billion in February 2018 — is launching a slew of new products compatible with Alexa, following the introduction of the Ring Door View Cam in January 2019. Perhaps the headliner is Control Center, a forthcoming component of the Ring app that will afford customers greater control over devices, services, and more. When it arrives later this month, users will be able to see and manage connected mobile, desktop, and table services, as well as third-party services, and to opt out of video requests from Ring’s local police partners. (Ring notes that it currently has 33 smart lock integrations in its ecosystem alone.) Future versions of Control Center will add additional privacy and security controls that provide greater visibility into Ring’s data handling practices. Control Center might be perceived as a direct response to criticism from advocacy groups like Fight for the Future and th...

‘Watchmen’ Season 1, Episode 5 Recap: ‘Squid Pro Quo’

The story behind Looking Glass and his shiny mask offers a clever subversion of the superhero origin story. The nuclear tensions that roil in the graphic novel “Watchmen” are resolved through a mass catastrophe, orchestrated by Adrian Veidt, to draw the world’s attention away from the imminent mutual annihilation of the United States and the Soviet Union. Put succinctly, Veidt drops a giant inter-dimensional squid on Manhattan, killing about three million people to save the lives of hundreds of millions more. The fallout from his actions affects the characters in “Watchmen,” but their impact on society is beyond the scope of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s book. At some point, artists have to choose when to put down the brush. For Damon Lindelof, however, exploring such enduring traumas is a primary motive for extending the world of “Watchmen” decades into the past and decades more into the future. Just as the legacy of the Tulsa massacre of 1921 has informed the show’s interest in racism and white supremacy nearly a century later, the impact of Veidt’s giant squid still reverberates in the daily lives of those who were affected by it. The great triumph of Lindelof’s HBO series “T...

Years ago when we first got a cabin in the woods, we had an Incinolet incinerating

Years ago when we first got a cabin in the woods, we had an Incinolet incinerating toilet. It was all stainless steel and built like a tank, but sounded like a jet plane in your living room and if the wind wasn’t blowing, the whole place smelled a bit like burned something. A friend’s child using it was so put off by the flames and smell that it put him off toilet training for a year. We switched to a composting toilet. But there is something so North American about incineration, compared to composting. It’s tidy and sanitary, just a bit of ash (a cup per person per week) instead of a big glob of poop and peat moss. It is truly living better electrically. If it works. That is why I was so excited about the Cinderella incinerating toilets that I saw at Toronto’s Cottage Life Show. It is a dainty glass slipper compared to the steel-toed construction boot that was the Incinolet. It is all tidy and modern and computerized as it turns your poop into cinders, Ella. They have sold tens of thousands of them in Norway where they have been made for almost 20 years. Like the Incinolet, you first insert a sort of wax paper coffee filter to line the stainless steel bo...

The Multiple DSF-family QS Signals are Synthesized from Carbohydrate and Branched-chain Amino Acids via the FAS Elongation Cycle

Thank you for visiting nature.com. You are using a browser version with limited support for CSS. To obtain the best experience, we recommend you use a more up to date browser (or turn off compatibility mode in Internet Explorer). In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. Members of the diffusible signal factor (DSF) family are a novel class of quorum sensing (QS) signals in diverse Gram-negative bacteria. Although previous studies have identified RpfF as a key enzyme for the biosynthesis of DSF family signals, many questions in their biosynthesis remain to be addressed. In this study with the phytopathogen Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc), we show that Xcc produces four DSF-family signals (DSF, BDSF, CDSF and IDSF) during cell culture and that IDSF is a new functional signal characterized as cis-10-methyl-2-dodecenoic acid. Using a range of defined media, we further demonstrate that Xcc mainly produces BDSF in the presence of carbohydrates; leucine and valine are the primary precursor for DSF biosynthesis; isoleucine is the primary precursor for IDSF biosynthesis. Furthermore, our biochemical analyses show ...

LG G7 ThinQ Hands-on: Super Bright, Loud, and AI-powered

By all accounts, the LG G7 ThinQ has had a troubled history. The Korean company’s mobile division intended to launch the flagship at Mobile World Congress 2018 in March, reportedly, but put the breaks on plans after LG chief Jo Seong-jin ordered the team to “[start] from scratch” and find a “strong[er] selling point”. For a time, it wasn’t clear when the LG G6‘s successor would see the light of day—after LG posted a whopping 233 billion won ($219 million) quarterly loss in January (the 11th consecutive down quarter), Mr. Senong-jin cryptically told reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show that LG would launch smartphones only “when they [were] needed”. It’s needed now, apparently. In late April, LG invited members of the press to preview the LG G7 ThinQ, the newest flagship in the company’s six-year-old G series lineup. Besides the capricious “ThinQ” branding, which follows on the heels of the LG V30S ThinQ and the company’s broader effort to marry its mobile products with its SmartThinQ connected washing machines, dishwashers, dryers, and other appliances, the LG G7 is in many ways a return to form. It’s got a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (the Snapdragon 845)...

Stoney Creek’s Charmed and Chalked breathes new life into former Britannia Cleaners store

For the last several months, Barb Giancaterina has been helping customers breathe new life into old furniture with her Stoney Creek business, Charmed and Chalked. Having a store in the heart of Stoney Creek’s Olde Town was a great opportunity. But Giancaterina quickly realized she needed more than 700 square feet to see her furniture refinishing and home decor boutique rise to its full potential. After noticing the former Britannia Cleaners, at 17 King St. E., was sitting vacant, Giancaterina made some inquiries and landed the space. Following two months of renovations, Giancaterina moved from a smaller King Street storefront into her current site, which had been vacant since Britannia closed its doors in September 2018. Offices in the back of the store have been rented to Accountable Bookkeeping Services. On Nov. 2, the newly-expanded Charmed and Chalked held a grand opening, showcasing everything the more than 2,400 square-foot-space has to offer. Along with examples of refinished and as-is furniture pieces, the new store offers a variety of home decor and gift items from local vendors. Selections include: The Seasonal Inspirations line of LED wall art; The Inspired Far...
