CHANDIGARH: Several sectors in the city faced waterlogging after heavy rain lashed the city today. Low-lying

CHANDIGARH: Several sectors in the city faced waterlogging after heavy rain lashed the city today. Low-lying areas in the city such as the Industrial Area, Phase 1, Ram Darbar, Mani Majra and Hallo Majra were flooded with rainwater. Thankfully, in the uppity fashion circles of India, the cause of ‘handmade’ has been making the right kind of noises. By offering 50 per cent subsidy on paddy transplanters, the state government is set to give boost to mechanisation in paddy transplantation in the upcoming season (June and July). According to statistics compiled by the Agriculture Department, about 12 lakh labourers from outside the state come every year in June and July to transplant paddy. However, over the last few years there is steep reduction in the number of labourers coming to the state. Therefore, farmers get stressed to transplant paddy in small window of 40 days. He said a walk-behind six row transplantation machine cost around Rs 3.50 lakh. This machine plants 5-6 acres of paddy daily. Similarly, fully mechanised riding type 6-8 row machine costs about Rs 10-15 lakh and can transplant paddy on about 10-12 acres daily. He said paddy transplanted by machines maintained ade...

Waste is one of the biggest problems plaguing music festivals, but now people are taking decisive

Waste is one of the biggest problems plaguing music festivals, but now people are taking decisive action. It looks like any other field – rolling green hummocks bordered by woodland and a handful of rural buildings. Dig down through the turf and scrape at the top soil, however, and another picture emerges. Amid the dirt, you will find aluminium beer can pull tabs, fragments of bottle glass and plastic. But this is no ordinary rubbish. On this patch of ground 50 years ago, music history was made. This is Bethel, a small town in the southern foothills of New York’s Catskill Mountains and the site of the original Woodstock Music and Art Fair. More than 400,000 music fans and hippies gathered here in 1969 for what would become a legendary weekend of music and revelries. But the festival and its audience left another enduring legacy behind when the music ended – mountains of rubbish. The trash cans provided by the organisers proved woefully inadequate for the huge numbers of people who turned up, as did the toilet facilities. Piles of bottles, beer cans, discarded sleeping bags, broken tents, plastic sheeting, newspapers and human waste were abandoned and trampled into the muddy quag...

HUBBARD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The $60 million aluminum slab and billet plant that Ellwood Group Inc.

HUBBARD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The $60 million aluminum slab and billet plant that Ellwood Group Inc. plans to build here to house its new Ellwood Aluminum division has been three years in the making, officials say, with the green light coming this spring from the parent company’s board of directors. The 70,000-square-foot plant will be built at the site of Ellwood Engineered Castings, 7158 Hubbard Masury Road. That plant employs about 100, says Patrick F. Callihan, president of Ellwood Engineered Castings, who is overseeing the expansion. Once operating at full capacity, the new aluminum plant is expected to employ 34. “We’ve signed on with an engineering firm in Indiana, and we’re working on the final layouts,” Callihan says. “We’ll break ground as soon as we get permits to install from the Ohio EPA, which we’re expecting in mid- to late October.” Several general contractors are bidding on the job and a decision will be made within “four- to six weeks,” he adds. The project, announced Wednesday, was made public following the approval of a 60%, 10-year enterprise zone agreement by the Trumbull County Board of Commissioners. It signals the Ellwood Group’s first venture into nonferrou...

Ford CEO under pressure to execute ambitious global strategy

The spotlight is on Ford CEO Jim Hackett and his ability to balance several significant challenges as the carmaker pursues new partnerships that complicate manufacturing operations while advancing a historic overhaul of its business in an increasingly uncertain global trade environment. The Dearborn, Michigan-based carmaker is not alone with the hurdles it faces. Auto manufacturers are aggressively turning to alliances with one-time rivals to reduce the large investment costs needed to produce emissions-free vehicles and develop autonomous driving technology. Ford, however, has been more open about its desire to join with other companies than some of its key competitors. But with those partnerships comes the need to manage multiple vehicle platforms while maintaining operational efficiency, a potentially difficult balance for management and a reversal from years of industry efforts to reduce supply-chain complexity. “You’ve got to think of these kinds of mutations as a way to win,” he said at a press conference on Friday. “How expansive can you make optionality and at the same time get the most efficiencies? I want you to expect that we are really managing that.” On Friday, Ford...

Export boom wanes in Houston as tariffs put on the brakes

Exports from Houston climbed in the first months of the year, but the rate of growth has slowed significantly as tariffs raise the costs of imports and exports and stronger dollar hurts sales and profits abroad. The value of goods and services traded through the Houston-Galveston Customs District in 2019 is on track to grow 3 percent this year, down 19 percent in 2018, according to Commerce Department data analyzed by the Greater Houston Partnership, a business-financed economic development group. The slowdown is driven by exports. In the first five months of 2019, the value of exports from Houston rose by $2.9 billion compared to the same period last year. But during the first five months of 2018, exports jumped $12.5 billion from the same period in 2017. The smaller increase could be due to the tariffs, lower commodity prices, a global slowdown in manufacturing and the increasing value of the dollar. A stronger dollar raises the costs of American products in foreign markets, which reduces demand abroad, according to economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. In addition, many of Texas’ major exported goods have been caught in the U.S.-China trade war. China’s retaliator...

IPP REVIEW–The Eastern Economic Forum and Russia’s Look East Policy

The Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), Russia’s economic outreach to the world, was held from September 11-13, 2018 and attracted participants from 60 countries. The most notable ones were China (whose President Xi Jinping attended the EEF for the first time in its history) and Japan (whose Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had recently held a high profile bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin). The EEF was held for three years continuously in Russia’s Far Eastern city of Vladivostok. Due to Western sanctions over the Russian annexation of Crimea; long-lasting tensions over Russian support for pro-independence fighters in eastern Ukraine; Russian anger over the promotion of Color Revolutions in its backyard, especially Georgia; and Russian weapons that were allegedly involved in the shooting down of a Malaysian Airlines jetliner that had killed all onboard; Russo-EU ties are strained. Russo-US ties are also strained for the same reason but the US under the Trump administration is keen to reach rapprochement with the Russians. In fact, in his meeting with NATO allies, President Trump pushed hard for the revival of the G-8 (the G-7 plus Russia). President Trump is trying very ...

Mourners lining up to pay final respects to Barbara Bush

HOUSTON — A spray of flowers covered the closed silver casket of former first lady Barbara Bush in the sanctuary of a Houston church as hundreds of mourners began arriving Friday to pay their final respects. People waited in line hours early for security screening before boarding shuttle buses to attend a public viewing at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, where Bush and her husband, former President George H.W. Bush, regularly attended services. Lucy Orlando was one of the more than 100 people in line 90 minutes before bus service began, travelling from Weston, Florida, to pay her respects. Originally from Haiti, the 74-year-old Orlando said has admired Barbara Bush for many years, including her work in promoting literacy. “She was a very sweet lady and she loves people,” said Orlando, who was carrying a gray suitcase containing framed photos of the couple and members of their family, including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura. Varney Johnson, a 49-year-old social worker originally from Liberia, said he also came to honor the former first lady’s work in supporting literacy efforts, saying: ̶...
