What are the evocative sounds and smells of your childhood? The sensations that you didn’t notice

What are the evocative sounds and smells of your childhood? The sensations that you didn’t notice at the time but which take you back immediately? For me one of them is the slight smell of phenolic resin from an older piece of consumer electronics that has warmed up; it immediately has me sitting cross-legged on our living room carpet, circa 1975. “Get ready for a life that smells of hot plastic, son!” John Atherton [CC BY-SA 2.0], via Wikimedia Commons. That phenolic smell has gone from our modern electronics, not only because modern enclosures are made from ABS and other more modern plastics, but because the electronics they contain no longer get so hot. Our LCD TV for instance nowadays uses only 50 watts, while its 1970s CRT predecessor would have used several hundred. Before the 1970s you would not find many household appliances that used less than 100 watts, but if you take stock of modern electrical appliances, few use more than that. Outside the white goods in your kitchen and any electric heaters or hair dryers you may own, your appliances today are low-powered. Even your lighting is rapidly being taken over by LEDs, which are at their heart low-voltage devices. There are...

As with so many complicated health issues, cleaning up your diet is a good place to

As with so many complicated health issues, cleaning up your diet is a good place to begin, says Megan Sheppard. Q. I have developed white patches on my arms, that my naturopath tells me are vitiligo. I have checked it out on the internet and some of the images are really concerning me.  The patches are only small right now, but I need to stop them from developing like some of the photographs I have seen.  The white patches are caused by a cessation in the natural pigmentation process, which is, of course, far more obvious if your skin is olive or dark.  The actual trigger for the loss of pigmentation is thought to be a result of a number of factors coming into play rather than one specific cause, hence the difficulty in treating this condition. Alcohol, caffeine, processed and sugary foods should all be cut from the diet completely for best results.  Tests indicate that low levels of stomach acid, low levels of B vitamins, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroid), fungal overgrowth on the skin or internally, and/or pernicious anaemia are all potential factors. Take a high strength B-Complex that will provide 400mcg of folic acid and 500mcg of B12 daily, if you are deficient in the B-v...

When you buy something using the retail links in our stories, we may earn a small commission. Outside does not accept money for editorial gear reviews. Read more about our policy. Forget stealing the hotel shampoo. Fill these durable Cordura bags with your shower and grooming essentials instead, and you’ll have everything you need in reusable, leakproof containers. Each weighs less than half an ounce and carries three ounces of liquid—well within TSA restrictions. Not all Dopp kits are created equal. The North Face’s version is made from tough ballistic nylon that easily withstands shower spray and mist. More importantly, it has a wide opening, a flat bottom, and a hook, so it can sit upright on the countertop or hang from the showerhead, always within reach. There are plenty of organic, biodegradable soaps out there, but it’s hard to beat the classic: Dr. Bronner’s. A liquid pure-castile soap (no chemicals or phosphates), it doubles as shampoo and bodywash. The label also makes for fun bathroom reading. Showers are great—when you can take them. But it’s not always possible, so make sure you have a pack of these wipes in your kit. They’re extra thick but soft enough to use in th...

Tommy Hilfiger joins Gap, Ralph Lauren and Lord & Taylor in closing its Fifth Ave flagship store

RewardStyle President Amber Venz Box on how the company’s app helps consumers shop for items used by social media influencers. Tommy Hilfiger announced this week that it will shutter its 22,000 square-foot global flagship location on New York City’s famous avenue as part of the company’s new “strategic objective” in reshaping its retail landscape. The company’s CEO Daniel Grieder said it also plans to close its store on Miami’s iconic shopping strip on Collins Avenue at the end of the month as well. Grieder said the retailer will instead continue to focus and invest in its online sales and the ongoing expansion of strong wholesale distribution partners. Tommy Hilfiger now joins the long-list of other retailers who have abandoned the shopping strip in recent months. Last year, Gap, Henri Bendel and Lord & Taylor all announced it will close its flagships stores. Earlier this year, Calvin Klein, which like Tommy Hilfiger is also owned by PVH Corp, announced it too is set to close its flagship store this spring. However, its store is located on Madison Avenue, just one block from Fifth Avenue. In 2017, Ralph Lauren was one of the first big clothing retailers to announce it...

The Best Motorcycle Tents for Camping on Two Wheels

The only thing more exhilarating than hitting the open road is hitting the open road on two wheels. Whether that means on a motorbike or under your own power on a traditional bicycle, there’s nothing like cruising some backcountry road at sunset with the wind in your hair, George Thorogood in your ear, and a few bugs in your teeth. When you’re ready to overnight along the way and an ordinary roadside motel won’t do, you need a proper motorcycle tent. Here are four of the best. Lone Rider’s MotoTent V2 is the closest thing to a gold standard in two-wheel tents. The best-in-class motorcycle tent features a large sleep area roomy enough for two riders and their gear. The integrated vestibule is wide enough for one adventure motorcycle with panniers. High-quality materials all around — a fire-retardant ripstop nylon shell, waterproof zippers, and aircraft-grade aluminum stakes — make it damn-near-bulletproof. Yet, the entire affair weighs just 12 pounds. The downside is that you’ll pay handsomely for the privilege of owning the best. A new MotoTent will set you back more than $550. Like Lone Rider, Redverz is well-respected in the world of adventure biking and two-whe...

Five household tricks for getting rid of poo stains

Unfortunately, it happens; most UK homes don’t have a bidet and unless you squirt a bit of water on your bumhole after you wipe it, there’s a high chance there might be some, er, leftover marks from your trip to the toilet. We’re human, shit happens (quite literally) and we’re not in the business of shaming people for their poo routines. You’re unlikely to notice it until you take your underwear off at the end of the day, and so the stain has effectively settled into the fabric – making it harder to get rid of. Here are some household tips and tricks on how to get your undies back to their original, glorious state. ‘Any stains that are soluble with water can be rectified with white vinegar,’ Esther Temple, cleaner and cleaning expert at Gear Hungry, tells Metro.co.uk. ‘Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with 1.4 litres of water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the stain and leave to settle. ‘Do not be tempted to water down the vodka as this will dilute the spirit’s power to neutralise smells. Vodka works to collect the odorants properties together. ‘When the vodka is left to evaporate, it will also lift the smell. Always make sure that you use original vodka and not ...

What to See and Do in Australian Wine Country, Hunter Valley

Get FREE email communications from Fodor’s Travel, covering must-see travel destinations, expert trip planning advice, and travel inspiration to fuel your passion. Wine tasting might not be at the top of your Australian bucket list, but the Australians do it well. A few hours outside of Sydney in New South Wales lies the Hunter Valley, Australia’s oldest wine region that’s home to gorgeous wineries, boutique hotels, incredible restaurants, and some only-in-Australia adventures. Do yourself a favor and save a day or two at the end of your Australian adventure to experience a wine country that’s different from anywhere you’ve ever been before. It’s unstuffy, lighthearted wine drinking in a beautiful place with fun-loving people. But it’s not all Bacchanalian feasts of gluttony, either. It’s beautiful here, with lush rolling hills and misty mountains. One of the best ways to experience this bucolic countryside is with a hot air balloon ride that takes you on a journey through the valley, skimming treetops and floating over a patchwork of vineyards. It’s an early morning wakeup call (especially in summer when sunrise is earlier) but it’s worth it to see the rising sun bathe th...

Host with the most: 10 things you might not know about Kevin McCloud’s Grand Designs series

Now in its 19th year, Grand Designs is a phenomenon. Here are 10 things even super fans might not yet know about presenter Kevin McCloud and the series itself. Identical twins Nik and Jon live next door to each other and have decided to build two modern-industrial homes side-by-side for themselves and their families. Identical twins, “adventurous” Nik and “pragmatic” Jon Daughtrey from Sheffield, live identical lives in many ways. …keep identical dogs and now, they’ve decided to build two identical modern-industrial homes – on stilts – next to each other. The site is tucked away behind the two houses Nik and Jon are currently renting. Home to a corn mill 200 years ago and two Fifties buildings until recently, it has a beautifully flat concrete yard. They buy the whole site for £173,000. Their aim to keep to a finite budget of £850 per square metre shocks Kevin, who describes the project as “dead cheap…an incredibly, unrealistically low sum”, which translates to £345,000 for both houses. After long delays, unexpected extensions and additional loans, the cost for both homes reaches £610,000 which, for the urban oasis they conjure from a rundown industrial ...

11 smarter buys that can help curb your plastic bottle use

Far and away the easiest solution, Klean Kanteen makes a single-walled reusable water bottle called the Reflect, which is made without even a speck of plastic. Pretty cool, huh? Alkaline water is a big hit these days, but most of it is presented to us in the form of pesky, ephemerally useful plastic bottles. Flow is not only made using 68% renewable materials, including a plant-based cap. Better yet, it’s cheaper than most other Alkaline water brands. A faucet-mounted filtration system is probably the easiest, most affordable solution for those looking to improve the taste of their water. Mercury, lead, chlorine, and some 60-odd other contaminants are removed using a PŪR water filter. What PŪR doesn’t pull out is fluoride, and it probably won’t rid your water of any heavy sulfur smells either. Still, this is a quick and easy solution to bad-tasting or chlorine-rich water (some municipalities add a great deal of chlorine to tap water), and it doesn’t take up any counter or kitchen space. Arkansas has been dishing up The Mountain Valley since 1871. No, this is neither the cheap nor the best solution. But, whether you’re just renting your apartment an...
